Last week I had the unique opportunity to visit Fukushima with the volunteers of Safecast, an organisation that measures radiation. For the first time in two years the area has been given a better access, allowing us to come deeper into the wasteland it has become. The radiation in the accessible area is though still much much higher as in Tokyo.

It is unbelievable how the Tsunami has created havoc and as a side effect caused the nuclear disaster as collateral damage that came with it. The area is mostly depopulated with complete empty villages and is being cleaned by liquidators. All over you see big ‘garbage bags’ full of contaminated material, obviously not even the tip of the iceberg... It will take many many years before everything will be cleaned, if ever. A second Chernobyl has been created. An area where only old people are still willing to live combined with a standstill of economic activity.

Almost back a week from a great holiday in Japan!

Final days in Tokyo. Fantastic weather, great food and people and finding some  designers such as Tsumori Chisato.

Japans public transport is very efficient, punctual and above all safe. No wonder people take the opportunity to nap whilst being on the move...

Public transport in Japan is a joy to use: clean, on time, fast, efficient, great service, good catering on board... what more can one wish for to bridge big distances

We spent an amazing week at the ocean in a ryokan at a very furthest east point of the Koichi district in Japan.

Some Japanese women have  interesting ways of fighting the sun, such as special sleeves and enormous 'croupiers' hats that resemble welding protectors.

The biggest in Osaka: aquarium and Ferris wheel.

Nara is a wonderful place and the deer are amazing....

Japan is an amazing country with lots and lots to explore. Very efficiently to travel through too with high speed transport the Shinkansen. The full set is here.

With urbanization and global warming continuing and the economic uncertainty  on top of that, urban agriculture is becoming of increasing importance. Aquaponics is an interesting part of urban argiculture and at Mediamatic they are scanning the frontiers of it. The full set is here.
